Crossbody bags

Fossil Modern Cargo Organizer vs. LeSportsac Kasey Cross-Body vs. Kavu For Keeps

Crossbody bags are the unsung heroes of every handbag collection. Utilitarian, sure, but often overlooked in favor of a slouchy hobo or a pint-size clutch. If you’re frequently on the go though, a small crossbody bag is especially useful. It leaves your hands free and secures your bag across your body rather than leaving it to dangle off your shoulder. Pockets enhance its usefulness: no more digging in the depths of your huge purse looking for your ID or keys. The bags below also easily slip a Kindle into their largest pocket, so you’ll truly be prepared for anything.

Fossil Modern Cargo Organizer

From: Zappos

Fossil’s Modern Cargo Organizer sounds like a purse version of surplus pants: rugged, utilitarian, and somewhat unisex. However, the name doesn’t accurately represent this bag, which is a marriage of form and function. It’s definitely not as small as the other two bags featured, at 13.5" wide x 2.5" deep x 11" high. It will easily fit an  iPad and Kindle as well as your wallet, keys, sunglasses, and even a small bottle of water. The space is divided into a main, zippered compartment, with a small zip pocket, cell phone and PDA pockets. There’s also an exterior front flap pocket and an organizer pocket with 4 card slots, perfect for quick access to a Starbucks card or metro pass. The size and luxes material – leather or suede – comes at a price. This bag is by far the most expensive of the three here, but if you want a crossbody bag that offers convenience without sacrificing style, this is your best bet – and our top pick.

Best for
  • Women who want the convenience of crossbody with the look of a trendy handbag
  • “Just in case” travelers who can’t pare down to just wallet, keys, and phone

LeSportsac Kasey Cross-Body

Best price:

LeSportsac’s nylon totes are well known for their graphic prints and ultralightweight, unstructured styles. The Kasey crossbody is no exception. Its nylon fabric makes it exceptionally lightweight at 1.3 pounds, and it’s available in an array of prints, as well as basic black nylon or patent.  The adjustable strap allows you to use the Kasey as a shoulder bag if you wish. Otherwise, it’s plenty long enough to sit at your hip or below. As a travel bag with three zippered compartments, the Kasey will hold a wallet, keys, passport, phone, lip balm, and potentially sunglasses. It’s really meant for the essentials. If you have a slim wallet tucked into the middle pocket, you could also make room for your Kindle in the largest pocket, which is 9.5 inches high, 7 inches wide and half an inch deep.  However, it’s too small for the iPad. While this bag is probably the best for travel, it’s too small for all but the most minimalist among us to use on a  daily basis.

Best for
  • Minimalists who can streamline their bag contents
  • Travel enthusiasts concerned with a lightweight bag that doesn’t scream “tourist”

Kavu For Keeps

Best price:
From: Zappos

Kavu’s For Keeps bag is slim and low-profile like LeSportsac’s Kasey, but its slightly larger dimensions add  some additional storage capacity. At 8.5 inches wide and 10.75 inches high, with a depth of 1 inch, one reviewer stated that she could even fit a change of clothes for her son in the largest pocket! The main pocket is big enough for an iPad or Kindle. The For Keeps bag has four individual pockets, including an exterior pocket with a “billow pocket” design that expands. While its design is useful for travel, the top compartment closes with a magnetic clasp rather than a zipper – a security concern if you’re storing your passport, wallet, or iPad in the main pocket. The contents will be protected by the bag’s water-resistant nylon-polyester exterior, though. The For Keeps bag is a good choice if you need just a little more room than the minimalist LeSportsac, but its magnetic closure keeps it from being our top pick.

Best for
  • Travelers to rainy environments who want protection for their documents
  • Everyday commuters who travel with wallet, keys, sunglasses, and iPad or Kindle
